华裔议员儿子身亡 温村当局遭起诉

(加西网综合)加拿大一名华裔参议员的儿子在接受非自愿精神病治疗失踪四天后,其尸体才在温哥华总医院院内被发现,温哥华海岸卫生局因此被死者家人告上了法庭。


这起诉讼指控卫生局和医务人员在2023年11月音乐家本杰明-马克斯-吴(音译,Benjamin Marks Woo)的死亡事件中玩忽职守。




Woo的父亲是参议员Yuan Pau Woo,母亲是医生Patricia McAvity,她在周一提交给BC省最高法院的诉讼中起诉卫生局,要求赔偿损失。


McAvity的民事索赔称,她的儿子患有精神疾病约10年,于2023年8月作为 “非自愿病人 ”被送入温哥华总医院。

诉状称,32 岁的 Woo 在 11 月 11 日被放出去抽了一小时的烟后死亡,但没有回来,而工作人员 “无视 ”其父母的担忧,疏忽大意,在四天后尸体被发现前没有对院内进行 “任何或适当的搜查”。


McAvity的律师Anthony Leoni表示,他的当事人非常痛苦,无法讨论此案,而吴参议员和卫生当局都没有立即发表评论。

诉讼称,该机构允许病人根据自己的行为获得临时离院的通行证,而Woo曾被评估为不请假离院的低风险人群。

民事诉讼称工作人员错误地向他们保证,在他失踪后,医院已经对院内进行了搜查。


但索赔书称,医院没有进行适当的搜查,“包括最后一次见到Woo的地方和已知藏有受管制药物用具的地方”。

索赔人称,四天后才找到尸体意味着Woo没有得到救生治疗,也意味着他的器官无法如愿捐献。

索赔没有具体说明 Woo 的死因,诉讼中的指控也未经法庭检验或证明。

该诉讼将温哥华海岸卫生局、维尼特-辛格(Vineet Singh)医生、帕拉丁安保集团(Paladin Security Group)和医院未具名员工列为被告。

When this kind thing happens, the whole society has to pay huge compensations and add new policies to ensure this kind of thing will not happen again. We all know that it is impossible to prevent those things from happening 100% but the families of victims believe they have the rights for protections. We always say that no one will be left behind. We finally find that all our pockets have been left behind for affordability.

    I went through something similar. A psychiatrist prescribed me the wrong medication; I lost consciousness and ended up in the ER, then was forcibly admitted to a psychiatric facility. I filed complaints with the hospital and the regulator, but there was no real accountability—just a line about “differences in treatment.” It felt terrifying and unfair.
