Some posts here have implied that there is a sort of cultural arrogance behnd my opposition to official multiculturalism.
Let me explain. I believe that the major cultures and languages of the world should be taught in our schools. Therefore Chinese language, history and culture should be taught. But it should be taught to all regardless of ethnicity and not because there are a lot of Chinese people here. And we should teach Mandarin because that is the national language of China, and not Cantonese even if the Cantonese speakers outnumber the Mandarin speakers here. What people do on their own does not concern me. Culture and ancestry need not be connected in Canada. If a child of a Chinese immigrant gets interested in Italian opera or Indian music, that is her choice. Her ancestry does not impose any obligation.
If Chinese culture or any other culture influences the evolution of the Canadian mainstream culture, so be it. Good. Let us all share in that common culture regardless of whom we think our original ancestors were.
I do not think any culture superior to any other. Some are more widespread, some are more universal. All are complex in their own spheres. All are out common patrimony as human beings.

So you wouldn't regard that as unfortunate? Good.
