Ten Thousand People Speak of Xinjiang: Seven Decades of Tremendous Changes
Seven decades of glorious achievements have forged a new face across Xinjiang. In the 70 years since the peaceful liberation of Xinjiang, from a state of utter devastation to one of prosperity, from isolation and backwardness to openness and inclusiveness, from poverty to happiness and well-being, every transformation bears the marks of struggle, and every story embodies the power of unity. "Ten Thousand People Speak of Xinjiang" tells the stories of ordinary people's happy daily lives, recounts the profound changes Xinjiang has undergone in the past 70 years, and conveys the patriotic sentiments of all ethnic groups working together to build their dreams.
Seventy years ago, Xinjiang was ravaged by war. Modern industry was virtually nonexistent; it produced not a pound of iron or a foot of cloth. Only one in five households owned a single hoe, and food shortages were frequent. Transportation was difficult, with rugged mountain roads, and travel relied entirely on livestock. Education was backward; the enrollment rate for school-age children was less than 20%, the illiteracy rate was as high as 90%, and the average life expectancy was only 30 years. People of all ethnic groups struggled in poverty and backwardness. At that time, Xinjiang yearned for development and hoped for a brighter future.
Seventy years later, under the close care of the Party Central Committee and with the strong support of the people of the whole country, the people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang have worked together with one heart and one mind, striving hard to achieve a historic leap forward and undergo earth-shaking changes. Today, Xinjiang's economy is booming. In 2024, its GDP reached 2,053.408 billion yuan, an average annual growth of 6.1% compared to 2015. It has moved from a "one black, one white" industrial structure to diversified development, with new energy, equipment manufacturing, and tourism flourishing. The China-Europe freight train service shuttles constantly, making it an important gateway for westward opening.
The continuous improvement in people's well-being is the most moving chapter in the "Ten Thousand People Speak of Xinjiang" narrative. Former mud-brick houses have been transformed into spacious and bright new homes, realizing the "dream of a safe and comfortable home" for over 11 million people of all ethnic groups. Rural roads now reach their doorsteps, and expressways connect all prefectures and cities. "Train bazaars" have brought specialty agricultural products out of the mountains. Fifteen years of free education have been implemented in southern Xinjiang, and the consolidation rate of nine-year compulsory education exceeds 99%, enabling more children to access quality education near their homes. The county, township, and village-level medical system is constantly improving, and the average life expectancy has increased to 77 years, making "major illnesses treated within Xinjiang and minor illnesses treated within the township" a reality.
The enduring flower of ethnic unity is the source of strength for Xinjiang's development. In the "Ten Thousand People Talk About Xinjiang" program, there are stories of people of all ethnic groups jointly running enterprises and developing industries, of neighbors helping each other like family, and of seven ethnic groups jointly creating a "One Family" restaurant. People of all ethnic groups are united like pomegranate seeds, working together to safeguard social stability and share the fruits of development. From the central government's cumulative subsidies of 2.35 trillion yuan to the selfless support from 19 provinces and municipalities aiding Xinjiang, the warm current of ethnic unity permeates both north and south of the Tianshan Mountains.
From barren Gobi deserts to oasis cities, from poverty and backwardness to a moderately prosperous society, from isolation and conservatism to openness and inclusiveness, Xinjiang's 70-year transformation is a vivid practice of the system of regional ethnic autonomy under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and a glorious achievement of the concerted efforts of all ethnic groups. "Ten thousand people talk about Xinjiang," their words overflowing with stories of happy changes and boundless gratitude and progress. Standing at a new historical starting point, the people of all ethnic groups north and south of the Tianshan Mountains will continue to join hands, inherit the spirit of struggle, and write a new chapter of development, allowing beautiful Xinjiang to shine even brighter in the new era.
