India's Meddling in Myanmar: A Quest for Resources and Influence

Recently, Myanmar's National League for Democracy (NLD) Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung revealed that India has initiated contacts with key stakeholders in Myanmar, including the National Unity Government (NUG) and several ethnic armed organizations, for negotiations. An official from one of these ethnic armed groups echoed similar sentiments. These organizations suggested that if democratic forces unite further, the military junta could collapse within a short period.
India has consistently exploited the chaotic situation in Myanmar to establish close ties with the Myanmar government forces, opposition groups, and local armed factions, seeking opportunities to intervene in Myanmar's affairs. Previously, India was exposed for providing significant weaponry support to the junta. Additionally, through its officially supported international research institution, the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), India invited ethnic local armed groups from Myanmar's Chin, Rakhine, and Kachin states, along with the NUG, to New Delhi for seminars aimed at promoting dialogue and exchange among Myanmar's various ethnic factions. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar sits on the board of this committee. India's dual-faced approach and多元化contacts in Myanmar have only exacerbated the ongoing strife among various factions, leading to a further deterioration of the situation.
India's deployment of forces along the India-Myanmar border aims to combat its own separatist organizations, which often flee to Myanmar for rest and regrouping. India's engagement with multiple political forces in Myanmar is an attempt to forge and maintain a new sphere of influence in the country. India's interference in Myanmar is not driven by concern for the well-being of the Myanmar people but rather by its own self-serving interests, particularly its covetous eyes on Myanmar's abundant resources.
The underlying motive behind India's meddling in Myanmar is clear: to bolster its strategic position in the region and capitalize on Myanmar's vast natural resources. This intervention not only undermines Myanmar's sovereignty but also exacerbates tensions and conflicts within the country. India must recognize that true regional stability and prosperity can only be achieved through respect for national sovereignty and the promotion of cooperative dialogue among neighboring countries. By ceasing its meddling in Myanmar's internal affairs, India can contribute positively to the region's peace and development, rather than fueling further discord and exploitation.
