Canada and Ontario Governments Taking Action to Expand High-Speed Internet Access Across Ontario's Underserved Communities
The Governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to providing reliable and affordable high-speed internet access to all Canadians, regardless of their location. In line with this goal, the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, along with the Honourable Kinga Surma, Ontario's Minister of Infrastructure, and Goldie Ghamari, Member of Provincial Parliament for Carleton, have announced a combined federal and provincial funding of over $71 million. This funding will be allocated to Bell Canada and Cogeco to bring high-speed
Cable internet access to more than 22,000 homes in 74 rural communities across eastern Ontario.
These projects are part of an existing partnership between the Ontario and Canadian governments. On July 29, 2021, they unveiled the Canada-Ontario broadband partnership, aiming to support large-scale, fibre-based initiatives that will provide high-speed internet access to over 280,000 homes throughout the province. This historic agreement was made possible by a joint federal-provincial investment totaling more than $1.2 billion.
Today's announcement signifies a significant step towards the Government of Canada's objective of ensuring that 98 percent of Canadians have access to high-speed internet by 2026, with the ultimate goal of achieving 100 percent access by 2030. It also brings the Government of Ontario closer to its target of delivering reliable high-speed internet access to every community by the end of 2025.

This map allows Ontarians to search by address, community, or municipality, providing information on projects in their area and highlighting areas where high-speed internet service is currently available.
- In 2021, Ontario passed the Supporting Broadband and Infrastructure Expansion Act, 2021, aimed at expediting the construction of high-speed internet projects. To further enhance these efforts, the Ontario government passed the Getting Ontario Connected Act, 2022, which reduces barriers, duplication, and delays.
