The City of Vancouver has passed a motion put forward by Mayor Kennedy Stewart that will allow the owners of 2,000 single detached homes to develop them into stratified units of up to six suites.
According to the motion , staff will be directed to target 2,000 single-family home or duplex zoned lots in the city “to be developed for up to six units.”
The new guidelines will allow height rises, plus units to be built below grade.
City staff are expected to come up with policies and guidelines to make the Making Home goals workable by the end of the year.
The site states the 2,000 single-family homes would be converted into 10,000 strata units.
It gives two examples of how the Making Home policy would work.
In the first case, a woman who has owned a single-family home for 35 years would be able to develop her home into four units. She could keep one for herself and sell three.
In the other example, four friends buy a single-detached home using a joint mortgage and turn that into a multi-unit dwelling. -
