We do not know if Celil was a terrorist or not. Undoubtedly any politial activity in favour of independence or autonomy for the Uighurs would be considered equivalent to terrorism by the Chinese government.
The fact that China does not recognize Celil as a Canadian citizen and arranged to have him arrested in a third country should be a wake up call to Chinese immigrants to Canada. and if they are full unbounded loyalty and pride in their original homeland you have to wonder why they come to Canada and give up their original citizenship to acquire a new one, and one that they consider quite a bit less glorious.
As for the Canada-China relationship I suspect most Canadians do not really care a great deal. I certainly fully support the government in defending a Canadian citizen (that is their responsibility) and challenging the actions of the Chinese authorities. I really could not care less about any consequences on Canada-China relations.
