Cruising on a big shipis about romance, excitement, fun, adventure, relaxation, and pampering. Somelines are better at these than others. The following list, in no particularorder, is based on assessments by
Cruiseline.com,which provides real reviews from actual travelers, and
Friends of the Earth (FOE), whichproduces annual report cards on the
cruise shipbusiness.
AVALON WATERWAYS
AvalonWaterways is
mostly known forits river cruises butit offers trips in Asia, South America, the U.S. and the Galápagos Islands. They didn’t get a very good rating because travelers don’t have much freedom tochoose what to do. They can’t really make their own itinerary. While gettingsick on the ship is not necessarily the company’s fault, Avalon was “verypoorly prepared for an event of this type,” according to a review on
Consumer Affairs.
NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE
TheBermudian company sails ships to Alaska, Hawaii, Bahamas, Europe, and theCaribbean. They pioneered the flexible dining trend more than a decade ago, andare still a
popular choiceamong travelers. Their less-than-perfect rating is due topassengers’ complaints about small cabins, bad customer service, food that istoo expensive but not good and inflexible cancellation
policy.
VIKINGS RIVER CRUISES
Thisis a huge cruise line company. Its fleet is the largestin the river industry – more than 60 ships. It
offers cruisingalong the rivers ofEurope, Russia, China, Southeast Asia and Egypt. Complaints, according to
Customer Affairs, have to do with high prices, very bad customer service, misinformation, andhaving to pay extra for better basic service.
COSTA CRUISES
Costa’sships sail to the Caribbean, Asia, Europe, South America and the Pacific.Perhaps the most famous cruise incident in the last decade occurredin 2012 when the Costa Concordia capsized. Another Costa ship caught fire anddidn’t have power for more than 12 hours. Some of the
argumentsagainst the cruise line includemeals at Club Restaurants not being included in cruise rate, alcoholic and nonalcoholicbeverages are also excluded, bad food, and rude onboard staff. Costa is alsoranked among the
leastenvironmentally friendly, according to FOE.
AMERICAN CRUISE LINES
Thecompany, which has a small fleet of just seven ships, offers specialty rivercruises that explore the
country’shistoric waterways. The biggest complaints from passengershave to do with the cruise line’s prices – they are too high for“average experience.” Some reviews even
called it “the cruise from hell” because of untrained staff.Others complained of the cabins and their poor décor.
STAR CLIPPERS
Peoplebook Star Clippers tours
for their uniqueexperience. They offer tall ship sailing vessels in theCaribbean, Costa Rica and the Mediterranean. The idea is to combine authenticsailing with modern cruising. Some of the bad
reviews have to do with the ships' lack ofelevators, too many stairs, and people suffering from seasickness. This is nota
kid-friendlyadventure.
MSC CRUISES
MSCis the second worst cruise line, according to the FOE report. Therating has a lot to do with
bad sewagetreatment and air pollution reduction. However, reviewsabout onboard services are poor as well. Badly cooked food, dirty rooms, watered down drinks,
lost luggage, loss of power, and too many people due to the fact that kids under 11 travel for free on selected cruises. Somepassengers have
complained that not many people from the staffspeak English.
ROYAL CARIBBEAN
Thisis one of the most famous cruise companies. It’s the world’ssecond-largest cruise line operator, after CarnivalCorporation. It offers
short and longcruises to Hawaii,Europe, Alaska, The Bahamas, Caribbean, and Asia. The reason this generallywell-respected brand is on the list of the “worst” is Norovirus. There havebeen 11 outbreaks since 2010, six of them since 2014, according to the
CDC.
P&O
Youmay expect more from the oldest cruise line in the world. P&O got a badrep for sewage treatment, air pollution reduction
and transparency.They have
not improvedtheir service, according to the FOE study which ratedP&O at the bottom, over the years. Passengers have complained, according toreviews on
Cruise Critic,of unprofessional staff, lack of organization, poor or little entertainment, and “inedible” food.
CARNIVAL
Carnival
Cruise Lines is a subsidiary of Carnival Corp., theworld’s largest cruise operator. The line’s overall grade isD due to several factors. Of its 24 ships only four have installed advancedsewage treatment systems. Between 2010 and 2014, two Carnival
ships traveledto Alaska whereauthorities cited one of the ships with four water quality violations. Also, doyou remember when in 2013 4,000 passengers were stranded in the middle of theGulf of Mexico for four days with no hot water and non-functioning toilets?Small cabins,
huge crowds and
low-quality food are other major complaints.
THOMSON CRUISES
Thisis not a “fancy” line but it doesn’t strive to be one either.
Many of thepassengers arefirst-timers from the working class. You will see a lot of families onboard, especially around the holidays. The company is on the list because of bad
reviews regarding its food,
customer service, terrible entertainment, and dirty facilities. Many passengers say they havefelt “cheated.”
OCEANIA CRUISES
Thecompany’s reputation still hasn’t recovered from the 2014 fire when threepeople died. The cruise line gets bad grades
when it comes tothe environment aswell. None of Oceania’s ships are plug-in capable and none have installedscrubbers, giving the company an
F for airpollution reduction, according to the FOE report. The MSRegatta, Oceania’s sole cruise ship operating in Alaska in 2011 and2014, received eleven citations for water quality violations.
