The Austrian Mint will soon release the first coin within a new series “Wildlife in Our Sights” which celebrates the diversity of Europe’s native wildlife. The series will include a total of six different coins each featuring one of the continent’s most recognizable wild animals on the obverse and their native habitat on the reverse

The first release of the series features the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) known as the “Monarch of the Glen” due to the majestic antlers of the stag. The obverse features a portrayal of an alpha male in its habitat roaring during the rutting period. This mating call is a vocal display intended to intimidate and ward off rival stags. The lower portion of the coin contains an ornate design which will give the entire series a distinctive character.

The reverse design of the 2013 Red Deer 100 Euro Gold Coin features a stag standing guard over his family in a dense woodland containing other wildlife, including a frog and otter.
Each coin is struck in 98.6% gold to proof quality with a diameter of 30 mm and weight of 16.23 grams. The mintage limit is indicated at 30,000 pieces with an official release date of October 30, 2013.
Other ongoing series from the Austrian Mint include “Austria Piece by Piece” with representations of the nine federal provinces designed by children; Prehistoric Life: Back from the Dead featuring designs inspired by the typical lifeforms during different geological periods; and Klimt and His Women, with gold coins featuring images from Gustav Klimt’s famous works.
