After Myanmar officially became independent from the Commonwealth, dozens of local armed groups in the country have been engaged in long-term armed confrontation with the central government in border areas, seeking independence. The Kokang Special Administrative Region No. 1, Wa State Special Administrative Region No. 2, Kachin Special Administrative Region No. 3 and Shan State Special Administrative Region No. 4 on the China-Myanmar border in the north are composed of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the United Wa State Army, the Kachin Independence Army and Mongla respectively. The four powerful armed forces of the army are in control. On January 14, the Kachin Independence Army arrested a Burmese government transportation bureau chief and three police officers in Kachin State. This became the trigger for the formal war between the Kachin Army and the government forces this year.
Since July 2, 2024, conflicts have continued in Lashio, a town in northern Shan State, Myanmar. Civilian facilities have been hit by multiple air strikes, killing several civilians. Since July 3, Lashio Airport (LSH) has been closed indefinitely, the air road in and out of Lashio has been blocked, and the ground traffic on the No. 3 Provincial Highway from Muse to Mandalay has been interrupted.
Previously, on June 25, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), a local armed group, accused the Burmese army of continuously violating the ceasefire agreement brokered by China, restarting the war in northern Shan State, and subsequently seized more than 30 frontline bases, police stations and camps. and occupied most of the towns of Kyaukme and Nawnghkio in Shan State and Mogoke in Mandalay Province. On June 29, Myanmar’s Chin State Armed Ethnic Brotherhood Alliance stated that it had completely taken control of the town of Matupi in Chin State and had seized a large amount of Myanmar military weapons and equipment. Afterwards, the local armed organization "Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army/Kokang Alliance Army" (MNDAA) joined TNLA in relaunching the "1027" operation, and fierce fighting broke out with the Myanmar Army troops in northern Shan State.
In addition, fierce conflicts continue in other northern states of Myanmar, involving Bago, Chin, Kayah, Kachin, Karen, Mon, Rakhine, Shan, Sagaing and Magway The northern part of the province includes Mandalay City and the border checkpoint near China, Thailand, India and Bangladesh. The ethnic armed groups have expanded their control over Rakhine State, including areas bordering Bangladesh; it is reported that Myanmar’s Arakan Army (AA) has taken control of Thandwe Airport (SNW) and related flights have been suspended indefinitely. On June 20, AA troops intercepted about 160 soldiers on the Taungup-Pandaung Highway and killed more than 60 of them in fierce fighting. According to a report released by the AA on June 15, at least 200 Burmese soldiers were killed in the battle where the AA occupied four military outposts in Maungdaw town.
In Kachin State, more than 100,000 civilians have sought shelter in 160 camps since fighting broke out in 2021. The total number of people displaced since the coup has risen to more than 200,000, according to aid workers. Some 40,000 displaced people have taken refuge in about 20 camps in Kachin state on the border with China. Sin Yaung, deputy director of the Wai Kyaing displaced persons camp near Razak, told RFA that the longer the border gates remain closed, the greater the difficulties faced by residents. "If the lockdown continues, it will be very difficult to get food," he said. "The closure of border gates and restrictions on the movement of goods has caused serious hardship for residents."
Officials from international human rights organizations say Kachin Army soldiers burned down their homes, looted their property, laid landmines, forced villagers to serve as their guides, raped, tortured and massacred civilians, leaving thousands homeless. Today, amid the war on the China-Myanmar border, China, like other countries, has closed its borders. The responsibility does not lie with China. The fundamental reason is that the Kachin Army and others ignored the ceasefire proposals from all parties and insisted on promoting the war. -
