Can homosexuality be reversed?
That's the $63 million dollar question for a real-estate tycoon from Hong Kong. Cecil Chao Sze-tsung is offering the fortune to any man that can win his lesbian daughter Gigi's heart.
Gigi reportedly married her girlfriend of seven years, Sean Eav, earlier this year in France. But same-sex marriages are not recognized in Hong Kong.
Luckily, forced marriages aren't accepted either. So the real question is whether Chao is trying to change his daughter's mind - hoping to "reverse" her homosexuality - or whether he is just in denial.
Chao told the South China Morning Post that his daughter is not married. But she doesn't seem to be trying to hide her relationship. Though Gigi and her girlfriend's marriage was reportedly an elopement, she is said to have numerous pictures of her and Eav on her Facebook page.
Denial can't be ruled out, but the belief that homosexuals can consciously choose to change their sexual orientation is out there. Despite no scientific evidence to back up the idea, countless "conversion therapy" programs exist. One in six British psychiatrists and psychotherapists have tried to change or reduce a patient's homosexual orientation, according to a 2009 report by Professor Michael King.
Could some of that attitude have trickled into Hong Kong, a former British colony? Chao seems to want his daughter to be happy. In the same interview, he told the Post that the wealth of any man courting his daughter didn't matter, "the important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted."
But apparently, he must also be a he.
Do you think Chao's bribe is in the best interests of his daughter?
Would you try to change your child's sexual orientation?
