The suicide of 15-year-old Jamie Hubley has stretched far beyond the nation's capital, affecting other gay and lesbian teenagers across Canada.
Hubley wrote on his suicide note in an online blog he was the only openly gay student in his school before taking his own life Saturday. His father, Ottawa Coun. Allan Hubley, also told CBC News Tuesday Jamie was bullied constantly throughout elementary school and high school and suffered from depression.
The teen's death has struck a chord with 17-year-old Cameron Aiken from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., who is a public speaker on homophobia.
Aiken, who is also a gay youth, will hold a moment of silence Thursday at his northern Ontario high school to remember Jamie Hubley. He also said he has experienced the homophobic taunting.
"Someone in the crowd just chose to yell out "faggot" and call me a name just for no reason," Aiken remembered in a conversation with the CBC's Ashley Burke, "And that really did hurt."

Jamie Hubley, 15, committed suicide Saturday after battling depression and being bullied over the fact he was the only openly gay teenager at his west Ottawa high school. -

- 时间: 2012-6-23 23:32According to Gould, Greenberg, & Velting (2003)'s study, approximately one million adolescents attempt suicide per year. Every 90 minutes one adolescent commits suicide, making it the third leading cause of death among ten- to 19-year-olds (Gould et al., 2003; Kaplan & Sadock, 2003). In their research, Kaplan and Sadock (2003) state, "Universal features in suicidal adolescents are the inability to synthesize solutions to problems and the lack of coping strategies to deal with immediate stressors. Therefore, a narrow view of the options available to deal with recurrent family discord, rejection, or failure contributes to a decision to commit suicide." For gay adolescents this reasoning is far more pronounced. The process of realizing that one is gay and having to accept it is not just an immediate stressor and can actually narrow one's options further by taking away coping resources, such as friends and family. Gay adolescents who "come out" (disclose their sexuality) may experience great family discord, rejection, and even failure from the disappointment they elicit (Hart & Heimberg, 2001; D'Augelli et al., 199
. It would make sense to conclude that homosexuality is an important risk factor for adolescent suicide. However, many physicians do not pay adequate attention to this factor, and textbooks fail to adequately emphasize this point. This reflects the need to understand the increased risk of suicide among gay adolescents.
The fact, that issues involving homosexuality are seldom discussed, itself provides evidence for an increased risk of suicide among gay adolescents, and attempts to facilitate an understanding of why these individuals are at such increased risk. With this understanding, a physician would be more likely to adequately approach the issue of sexuality with an adolescent and ultimately play a more significant role in suicide prevention.

Bullied teen Jadin Bell committed suicide for being gay: 'You are needed by the world,' mourner says

LA GRANDE -- About 300 people attended a memorial service Friday for a gay La Grande teen-ager who died two weeks after hanging himself in a schoolyard here.
Fifteen-year-old Jadin Bell, known for his infectious smile and words of encouragement to others, died last Sunday at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. He and his father, Joe Bell, had spoken to a school counselor about a bullying incident about a week before he tried taking his own life.
"I know Jadin touched every single person's life here in some way," Pastor David Eddy of the La Grande Faith Center told mourners.
Many of those attending were Bell's schoolmates at La Grande High School, where he was a sophomore and cheerleader. Students dabbed at their eyes with tissues and handkerchiefs during a video screening of his life accompanied by the song, "True Colors," played by the high school's Treble Choir.
Family friend Mardell Fischer had watched Bell grow up and remembered him "rolling with laughter on the floor ... I remember him running and laughing and crying," she said.
"This has been the hardest thing I've ever had to go through," said Devon Bennett, a close friend of Bell's, choking back tears.
"The day will come when something great happens and I can't wait to tell Jadin," she said. "I'd like to believe he's here and hasn't really abandoned me."
Family friend Bud Hill, an electrician at Eastern Oregon University, recounted a story of Bell rescuing a butterfly caught in a car's grille.
"Everytime I see a butterfly now, I see Jadin," said Hill, who was "Uncle Bud" to Bell. "Who knows where this young man could have gone in his life?"
Hill read passages from some of the 107 letters mailed to Bell at the hospital by friends and schoolmates before his death. Among them:
-- "In first grade we were being bullied by some older boys. Do you remember? You stood up to them." "Jadin, you are so special. From the moment I met you I knew that second that this kid is going to be awesome."
-- "You bring sunshine to a room. Your smile makes the gods sing."
-- "Jadin, you need to pull through this. You are needed by the world."
Scott Frank, a retired La Grande police officer, summed him up: "He is a son anybody would be proud to have."
Kevin Cahill, an English and French teacher at La Grande High, said Bell was always less interested in the ending of a book being studied by his class than in the motives of its characters. He spoke softly, but his earnestness made other students fall silent, Cahill said.
Bell's suicide attempt stunned those who knew him. He smiled so often, had so many friends, was so stylish, offbeat, social, creative and smart that his reasons remain a riddle, several said.
One other teen-ager was involved in the bullying episode, but school officials have disclosed no details. Internet harassment and other factors may have played a part, too, some friends said.
"He's gone, and all that remains is the yearning for Jadin to return," Cahill said. "But we know that's not how it works. We have lost him and we are diminished by that loss."
