The announcement that the alternative rock group R.E.M. had disbanded was conducted with uncharacteristic clarity, but also the sort of understated grace that did characterize much of R.E.M.’s music. “We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening,” read the statement posted on R.E.M.’s website.
