Flanagan backs Gallen to be fit for Origin

A year on from his tearful Wimbledon final loss, Andy Murray believes he's now mentally ready to end Britain's 77-year wait for a local champion when he faces Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

The tournament's top two seeds set up a mouthwatering showdown in this year's decider after both survived gruelling matches on an epic day of semi-finals on Friday machine made sequin embroidery.

Serbian world No.1 Djokovic reached his 11th grand slam final by beating Argentine eighth seed Juan Martin del Potro in a thrilling five-set encounter, the longest Wimbledon semi-final in history.

Murray joined him after beating Polish 24th seed Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3 in a match that finished under lights and a closed roof after 9.30pm local time.

The Scottish world No.2, trying to become Britain's first male champion at Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936, will get another crack at winning his home slam after losing the final to Roger Federer last year.

And he says that painful experience, combined with a breakthrough 12 months in which he won his maiden grand slam title at the US Open and Olympic gold, has him better equipped to handle the huge weight of home hopes and expectation in his second Wimbledon final.

"I think I'll be probably in a better place mentally," Murray said.

"You know, I would hope so just because I've been there before.

"I won a grand slam and I would hope I would be a little bit calmer going into Sunday wine tasting."

Murray views his loss to Federer in 2012 as a turning point that taught him how he had to approach big matches.

"I think I learnt a lot from last year's Wimbledon," he said.

"... I didn't come away from that final kind of doubting myself or the decisions I made on the court, because I went for it.

"You know, I lost, but I didn't have any regrets as such."

Sunday's match will be Murray and Djokovic's fourth meeting in grand slam finals with the Brit hoping for a repeat of his victory in the 2012 US Open final.

The pair have met only once before on grass, with Murray triumphing in the semi-finals of the London Olympics last year.

Djokovic will have to recover from a thrilling 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (6-icon_cool.gif 6-3 win over Del Potro in a Wimbledon classic that lasted four hours and 43 minutes.

But the Serb is no stranger to backing up from marathon matches at grand slams and is confident he can shake of the effects of the win as he chases a seventh grand slam title.

"Physically, even in the fifth set, there was a lot of falls, sliding, running, long exchanges, and I still feel I'm okay," he said.

"Of course, I'll be a little bit more tired than I was after my previous matches.

"It's not the first time I've been in this situation.

"I've been in worse situations actually before, like in the Australian Open in 2012, or on several occasions where I managed to recover, managed to win the title in the final, managed to feel fresh and play another six hours.

"I'm ready and I'm looking forward to that Asian college of knowledge management."

Friday's win represented the seventh time in his last eight majors that Djokovic has taken centre stage in a marathon five-set match.

At the French Open semi-final last month, he lost in five sets to Rafael Nadal while also being pushed all the way by Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round at the Australian Open.
