Anxious wait for Gilmore's last words

Prime Minister John Key says his party should escape any collateral damage arising from disgraced MP Aaron Gilmore's planned resignation speech, despite having no control over what will be said bathroom storage.

Mr Gilmore is expected to make his final speech in the house on Tuesday afternoon, after resigning as a National MP on Sunday night.

His resignation comes after revelations he acted inappropriately during a boozy night out in Hanmer Springs, including threatening to get the prime minister to sack a barman.

On Tuesday morning, Mr Key said he wasn't worried about harm to National as a result of Mr Gilmore's last words.

"People tend to see this as an individual issue as opposed to a party issue. I might be wrong but I think that's the way most people would see this thing," he told reporters hotel school.

Mr Key said he had no control over what would be said but that the whole saga was coming to an end.

"You can go through the entrails of this whole thing but in reality it's been a tough couple of weeks for Aaron Gilmore and I don't think it's been a terribly great exercise for parliament in general."

National Party president Peter Goodfellow says its entirely up to Mr Gilmore what he says in his speech, but his own advice was "to be gracious".

Labour leader David Shearer says his party will be happy to enjoy the show.

"We'll be there with our popcorn and Coke, and, like you, waiting for what he's got to say," he said Logistics Warehouse.

Mr Gilmore dodged media questions as he headed into his final caucus meeting, and left just minutes later to applause from his caucus colleagues.

His final speech comes a day after Mr Gilmore sent text messages threatening "utu" (revenge) to some National Party associates.
