Self-image Confidence, Physique Social Anxiety, and Exercise Dependence Ya-Chun Chang Chiu-Chen Chang* Fu-Ci Jhong Abstract This study identified the relationships among self-image confidence, physique social anxiety and exercise dependence. 927 subjects were recruited from aerobic dance classes from exercise centers, and administered Self-image Confidence, Physique Social Anxiety, and Exercise Dependence scales. In the Exercise Dependence scale, purposive sampling was used to select at least three dimensions, yielding an average score of more than 4 in 211 subjects (average age 36.04 ± 9.52 years old) . Data was analyzed using structure equation models. Results showed direct positive correlation between both self-image confidence and physique social anxiety, and exercise dependence. Through the intermediary effect of physique social anxiety, self-image confidence was positively correlated to exercise dependence. In conclusion, when exercise was used to cultivate self-image, subjects tended to be more anxious about physical attraction, weight control, ability and physique. The subjects lost control over their amount and time of exercise, exercised in spite of injuries, and manifested withdrawal symptoms when unable to exercise. Therefore, to avoid exercise dependence in pursuit of self-image, emphasis on physical appearance, skills and particularly physique should be reduced. 贊踩回復 0
