Its difficult to defend anyone who is accused of smuggling that amount of drugs. And recently a Canadian woman who defaced a wall in Thailand was jailed. When you are travelling you are guest of that country and you have to follow their rules and you are responsible for your actions. Defacing property and smuggling drugs comes with a severe penalty in other countries and especially Asia. Ignorance is not a suitable defence since there have been multiple situations where travellers have been jailed and on occasion executed for breaking their laws.

Do you really have a clue how many lives will be in jeopardy because of 220KG of methamphetamine? I am sorry that someone should argue in favor of him. In China, if the smuggler carries more than 50g of heroin, the person will be executed let alone 220KG. If you have some friends taking drugs you will know their lives are totally screwed up because of the drug.

This guy Robert Lloyd Schellenberg deserved a stiff sentence. He has had a long history of doing drug trafficking since 2003. In 2012, a Canadian judge Neill Brown told Schellenberg he was lucky for being a Canadian before sentencing him to two years in jail for possesion and trafficking of cocaine, heroin, cannabis resin and methamphetamine. He promised the judge he would change to get a lighter sentence but never did. Even his own father cut off relationship with him for his repeated drug offenses and criminal history. He just never learned.

This guy was trying to move 480lbs of meth and got caught, maybe he should of been smarter or at least read the rule book in the country he decided to severely break the law in. He would be burned alive in our country by the media for his actions but because he faces charges in China he is special all of a sudden and we need to defend him. He should of shut his mouth and took the 15 years, I would be disgusted as a Canadian if we helped free a known international drug smuggler. Think of all the overdose lives that were saved by catching this guy. There are legit concerns with China this is not one of them and a distraction from real issues. This guy temped fate and lost again he should of been happy with the 15 years considering they let him off pretty easy considering the penalty for the amount of drugs he was smuggling in a country that has a zero tolerance for it.

15 years is already a reduced sentence, a favor given to him since he is a foreigner. He should have been happy about that. China suffered a lot from two Opium Wars and the entire country was paralyzed because of opium. China is extremely harsh on drug smugglers. There are something comicals about this news. Firstly, several canadians were sentenced to capital punishment in the USA as well. How come we don't see the same actors crying out loud about their "arbitrary" sentences? As for China, it's well known that the Chinese laws are very harsh toward the drug offenders. Usually, drug traffickers get the capital punishment in China for a quantity of stupefiants far less than this guy trying to smuggle. He was lucky previously for having an easy sentence (15 yrs). But he didn't seize his luck and he appealed the sentence. Now he's facing something far worse and he should deal with his decision. Furthermore, if we played devil's advocate, we can ask why should we give him a preferential treatment when other drug smugglers receive the capital punishment for something less. After all, Canada cherishes "fairness" and support strongly the "rule of law". right?

Small potato such as Canada, being sandwiched between 2 superpowers who never play by the rules, need to think and act interdependently, at least for this once, to save itself. Just imagine, if Canada secretly allows a smuggling of Meng out of the country in one cold and dark night, will it get punished more heavily than it already has been? No. Of course not. We will have done ourselves as well as everyone else a great favor. We in fact will have contributed greatly to world peace and human kind, possibly helping the world to avoid a potential WWIII.

He was caught in a flight fleeing China after he found out the police is after him. 3, he's not re-trialed against his will. He initially got 15 years. But he demanded retrial 2 times himself to the high court of China, who in turn found out about the light sentencing by a local court and ordered the case re-trialed. 4, He's smuggling meth into Australia. if you use the published overdose rate of drug addict, hundreds of people will be killed and millions of dollars spent to get the 200+kg meth off the street of Australia.

This time they just think Canadian should be treated equally as Chinese...Another observation: When Canada arrests Meng Wanzhou, the ministry of foreign affairs of China reacts and such reactions are always described as "anger". When Canadian citizens get caught by China, the prime minister comes up and no media said it is anger... I have never seen Xi Jinping talks this sort of thing publically. Anyway, I guess media assume that everyone understands Canadian politicians' fear of losing votes and desire for publication.

lmao this dude sold 240kg of Meth. Chinese Citizen would've gotten executed if found with 50g of meth. It's a harsh law, but it's the law there. Meng was arrested for allegedly selling technology to Iran that is under sanction by US, which is not allowed in the US, but she did not violate ANY Canadian Law. Trudeau choosing to arrest Meng is the real Contriversial here.
