英文履歷表的寫作與送發

<何時需要履歷表>

在目前就業競爭激烈,甚至應徵清潔工,都要先送履歷表篩選的情況下,准備一份吸引人的英文履歷表,是在美國找工作的第一步。用電腦或打字機打一份完美的履歷表,告訴對方您是誰,您懂些甚麽,以及您做過些甚麽,然後把握每一個機會分送出去,以求得面談的機會,是最普遍的求職方式。到任何公司去找工作,都需要填工作申請表(application form) 時,如果帶一份履歷表抄寫過去,不但省時省力,而且不會填錯資料。

我認為即使不在找工作的人,也該在電腦中打好履歷表存起來,而且隨時更新變動,以備不時之需。在許多需要介紹自己的場合,例如做義工時,或接受邀請演講時,有一份履歷表可以讓人一目了然,加深別人的印象,也省去自己許多唇舌。

根據統計,一般公司只花二 秒鍾的時間看一張履歷表,就決定要不要面談此人,所以履歷表要「簡潔有力」、「嵌合徵才條件」最重要,否則,再好的經歷、學歷都沒有登門一談的機會。

<親自撰寫履歷的重要性>

雖然現在電腦的求職網頁上,有許多現成的履歷表格式,只要依序填入自己資料,或是有許多代寫履歷表的機構,但是履歷表最好能夠自己親自編寫。一來不會千篇一律,毫無特色,因為只有自己才最了解自己。二來在編輯履歷表的過程中,可以對自己的經歷、學歷,作一番整理與復習,將來面談時,才能從容地回答問題。

我在工作上會個別教導華人,如何寫履歷,並幫忙刪改、校對,但是一定要請當事人自己擬稿,因為我常看到有些職業訓練學校替學生寫履歷,不但完全一個模式,而且當事人根本不熟悉內容,這在將來面談的時候會出很大的問題。如果公司在雇用人之後,發現有不實的資料,一定會馬上解雇,而且將來別家公司知道,也絕對不會錄用。不可不慎。

<履歷表的基本內容>

英文履歷表的寫作雖然沒有固定的格式,但是以清爽、明白為最重要。要在一頁紙上把自己的特色經歷呈現出來,希望篩選的人能慧眼識英雄,給予面談的機會,必須要再三斟酌修改,在外觀及英文文法上,達到完美的地步。而且要准備多種版本,以應徵不同的工作職位,或因應不同的工作資格要求,不能一份履歷走天下。

大公司的履歷表都是先到人事室或專門負責招聘的人手上,他們也許不是從事您的專業,所以在作履歷表時要假想對方對您的專業並不深入了解,不要太用專業術語,通常細節是要到面談時見到部門的負責人,才有充分表現的機會。

我在辦公室負責華人的就業服務,很感慨許多新移民不了解履歷表完美性的重要。常常當我面談求職者時,看到有非常適合的工作,但是公司要求先送履歷表過去,我請求職者趕緊回家做一份履歷表。於是有的隨便用手寫一份給我,有的向我要表格填寫,有的請家人打字後卻又用筆塗改,更有的錯字連連,慘不忍睹。也有許多博士、碩士學位的高學歷、高經歷朋友,履歷洋洋厚厚一疊,告訴我他送出去上百份卻都沒有回音,其實這是不合時宜的。還有就是自己的性別、年齡、婚姻狀況、移民身份等資料不要寫在履歷表上,另外除非您的興趣、嗜好與工作有關,否則也不要列出。

<履歷表的版面格式>

履歷表以一張為宜,最好不要超過兩張,尤其是一張又多幾行的履歷最好調整為一張。許多專業人士告訴我因為過去的經驗太多,兩張不可能寫得完。其實,如果過去的工作都是類似相關的經驗,可以用 Summary 的方式來濃縮篇幅。

版面的安排雖然沒有絕對的標准,但是也有一般性的基本要求。字體以電腦字體 10到14號為宜,而且只有自己的名字用14號,其他用 12號即可。而且不要用多種不同的字體,看來會太過復雜。列印時左、右留白各一寸,上、下以半寸到一寸為宜。除非您是應徵繪圖或是設計方面的專業工作,否則不要試著在履歷表上顯露您的設計才能,要用最保守的格式、最保守的紙張;除非應徵模特兒或演藝人員,也請不要附上自己的照片。

現在許多公司先用電腦掃瞄篩選履歷,更有許多要特加注意的: 不要用斜體字、字底畫線,不要用陰影、圖像,也不要用釘書針或摺疊履歷表,如果要摺,一定要摺在空白無字的地方;因為這些在掃瞄時都可能會有問題。有需要特別加強的部份,只要用「大寫」及「粗體」來區別就夠了。

<履歷表樣本>

以下是一份可作參考的履歷表樣式,但是請根據個人情況作調整。例如: 學歷與經歷的順序因人而異,根據您個人占優勢的項目放在前面。剛畢業或剛職訓結業者,就該把學歷放前面,若有與應徵的工作有相關經驗者,就把經歷放前面。 Summary 也不是每個人都需要的,從事同一類型工作多年,或是離開就業市場多年再重返就業市場者較為適合。

履歷表上不要打出 Resume, Name, Address 等字,只要直接打出您的姓名、地址,及聯絡資料即可,最好全放正中,而且放在一起。我常看見許多履歷表上這些資料分散左右,字又特別小,其實「您」是重點,應該給對方聯絡時一目了然的方便。如果您有英文名字可以放上去,因為中文名字有時讓人雌雄莫辨,而且讓對方不知如何發音。

Objective( 目標 )是告訴對方您所要應徵的工作職位,只要明確告知一個工作職位,不需要一大堆形容詞。許多履歷表寫了「以發揮所學,發展所長」,「讓我學習」等不著邊際的話,並沒有告訴對方您要應徵哪一項工作,要知道這並不是讓公司替您決定您該做甚麽的時刻。如果這家公司同時在招聘不同的職務,而您想應徵不同的職位,則要分別寫不同的履歷表,不可把所有工作全列在同一張上,因為閱信者可能要把不同職位的履歷表分送到不同部門去,他在不知往哪裡送的情況下,乾脆往垃圾桶裡送。還有中國朋友寫「讓我練習英文」的目標,公司花錢是要請一位明確自己目標、替公司工作、增進公司利潤的人,不是替您安排一個職位或是學習的機會,所以一定要先確定自己要應徵的工作,如果真的不知道,寧可略過這個項目。

Summary( 總說明 )並非每個人都需要。對於從事同一行業多年的專業人士,可以將自己綜合的經驗列出,這對從事電腦業者、高科技,或研究人士最為適合,還可以分為硬體、軟件、網路等項目列出,這樣,在每一個工作經驗時就不必再一一列出細目了。對於離開就業市場一段時間的家庭主婦或退休人士,也適合用這種方式列出經驗,以免以年歷列出的工作經驗暴露出一大段空白。

Experience( 經驗 )要由最近的一個工作倒回去寫。工作時間如果是跨年,則不必寫月份; 如果在同一年內,則要寫出月份。公司名要用大寫,分號之後是地區及州,不必寫詳細地址,如果是美國之外的國家,則只要寫城市及國家即可。第二行寫工作職稱,一定要找出最適合自己工作的職稱,有很多在中國人公司工作的人說自己甚麽都要做,這種情況最好是寫與應徵的工作相關的職稱。如果在一家公司由較低職位一直升上去,就依照年月分別列出不同的職位及工作內容。第三行開始寫出工作內容,這是在履歷表中最重要、最需要花時間,也是我們中國人在履歷寫作中最弱的部分。

很多舊式的履歷表用 Responsible for …來寫工作內容,這不夠生動及行為化。目前的履歷表最好選擇有力的、明確的行動動詞 (action verbs),列出自己做些甚麽事,讓對方彷佛看著動畫片中的您走過來做這件事,走過去做那件事,不是模糊不清、輕描淡寫地猜想對方應該知道您做些甚麽。如果是目前還在做的工作用動詞現在式,如果是過去的工作,則用過去式動詞。

圖書館或市面上所有教寫履歷表的書或課程,都只列出一長串的行動動詞作參考,並沒有完整的子句,對於很多中國朋友來說,仍然不知如何使用該動詞。我在本文中特別將一些新移民較普遍的工作內容以動作列出,希望能提供大家依自己的工作經驗選擇,而後綜合,靈活運用。如果徵人廣告上有列出工作職責,其實最好的方法就是根據廣告上的條件及工作內容去發揮。

以下列出幾類職業的工作內容,動詞全部用「過去式」時態,是因為許多人會疏忽: 已不在職的工作要用過去式。在每類職業之後,「舉例」的目的,是因為許多人都認為別人應該知道自己做些甚麽,或是認為自己甚麽都做,所以不必甚麽都寫,並不知道一般的美國人士多會詳細列出所做的事,當然雇主比較之下,孰輕孰重,可想而知。所以希望大家能學所舉的例子,列出漂亮的成績單。
