It is getting cold. At Mount Currie Native Reserve, I was just told the temperature dipped to -11C. Dampness plus cold worsen the misery of those suffering from chronic osteoarthritis and rheumatism. Even the promise of work in the massive Sea to Sky Highway Expansion failed to benefit most local natives. A token contract clause did obligate the US contractor who got the entire contract to employ some aboriginals.
Yet being a dignified and self-reliant people, none of my native friends called to raise help. And I am guilty of being too focused on recovering the missing pages of BC’s history and not keeping updated with their latest. Now that I found out the poor health of their community, I want to share the situation with many of you who have been with me to Mount Currie, and with others who want to do something meaningful this Christmas. To prevent a disaster, we are starting a collection of non-perishable food and money to meet their need. Just imagine, if we can all refrain from spending the next $10, $20, $50 on the commercial gods of Christmas, we can do something wonderful to our less fortunate friends. So weather permitting, I will drive and deliver to Mount Currie whatever we can collect by December 27.
On December 28, you are welcome to join me to cheer up the sick and the hungry. You are also welcome to drive as well (as I hope we will have more food than a car load). I apologize for the short notice and here is how you can help by dropping off or mailing to (If cheque, please make it payable to CFRS):
Richmond: Primerica, Stephen Cheung’s office at 8120 Granville Ave. Suite 210, Richmond
Vancouver: Vancouver Chinese Baptist Church office at 7474 Culloden St., Vancouver Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm.
Your deeds though not validated by an earthly power will be by a heavenly one who said:
“For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.”
Matthew 25:35,36
May your Christmas be a blessed one!

It has now been a week sense the disaster hit Haiti.....people are still dying. The RICHMOND LIONS CLUB is co-hosting a fundraising dinner with the Continental Seafood Restaurant in Richmond on January 28 for a meager price of $48.00 per person. It is guaranteed that $30.00 of this price will be donated to the TZU CHI FOUNDATION CANADA.
The Richmond Mandarin Lions Club has a long relationship with the Tzu Chi Foundation and knows that there are NO administration fees deducted from the donations. 100% goes directly to the relief effort in Haiti.
For more information please contact the Richmond Mandarin Lions Club Secretary ( Helen QUAN) AT (604)649-2837
The TZU CHI FOUNDATION and the RICHMOND MANDARIN LIONS CLUB will be conducting "street Fund Raising" on January 23.
