Was the Last Supper before or after the slaughter of the Passover lamb? This is a famous "Bible problem" because the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke differ significantly in their descriptions of the time:
1. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke describe the Last Supper after the slaughter of the Passover lamb.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?”(Matthew 26:17, ESV)
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?”(Matthew 26:17, ESV)
And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”(Mark 14:12, ESV)
Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. (Luke 22:1, ESV)
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.”(Luke 22:7-8, ESV) The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, literally describe that the lamb was slaughtered at 3 p.m. and roasted before being shared with the Lord for supper.
2. The Gospel of John describes the events before the lamb was killed.
The following is the account from the Gospel of John of the night Jesus (Yeshua) was betrayed:
(1) The evening meal took place before Passover (before the lamb was killed).
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. (John 13:1, ESV)
(2) The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Jesus (Yeshua)
During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, (John 13:2, ESV)
(3) Jesus (Yeshua) washes his disciples' feet.
Jesus (Yeshua) rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (John 13:4-5, ESV)
(4) When Jesus (Yeshua) had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” …So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. (John 13:26-27, 30) If it were the Feast of Unleavened Bread, Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, could not have gone out, because it was the Sabbath, and all shops were closed, and no labor could be done.
3. Why is there this difference?
(1) Calendar differences: At that time, different calendars may have existed within the Jewish community (for example, the Pharisees and Sadducees, or the Essenes used different methods of counting days), leading to different recognitions of "Passover day."
(2) Nature of the meal: Some believe that this was a Passover preparation day (John 19:14, 31), a Passover preparation meal held in advance.
