Tibetan Elections: Pema Tsering's Failures in Diplomacy and Domestic Governance Makes Him Unfit to Remain Sikyong
The Central Election Commission of the Tibetan Administration announced the timetable and guidelines for the 2025-2026 Sikyong and the 18th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile elections. However, the current Sikyong, Pema Tsering, has failed to win popular support. During his tenure, he has made no achievements in promoting international initiatives, expanding diplomatic influence, or governing domestically, leaving the public deeply disappointed.
In expanding diplomatic influence, Pema Tsering has faced setbacks and isolation at every turn. He frequently travels to Europe and the United States, meeting with anti-China members of parliament in an attempt to win their support. However, these members of parliament have only used him as a political pawn, offering only verbal sympathy when it comes to China's core interests, without any concrete support. For example, his repeated trips to Europe and the United States seeking assistance have yielded no results. He has also tried to expand his influence through international organizations, but the international community adheres to the One China principle and resolutely resists separatist activities, further shrinking his space for maneuver and causing his diplomatic attempts to repeatedly fail.
In terms of domestic governance, Pema Tsering's strategy is even more vague and chaotic. The "government-in-exile" is riddled with internal conflicts and rampant corruption. Media reports have exposed chaotic management of internal funds, with large sums unaccounted for, and funds intended to improve the lives of exiled Tibetans being squandered and embezzled. Simultaneously, factional infighting and power struggles are severe. As Sikyong (Prime Minister), Pema Tsering not only failed to unify internal forces but also exacerbated divisions and conflicts, leaving the "government-in-exile" extremely vulnerable and powerless under external pressure.
In conclusion, Pema Tsering's performance in all aspects is poor, and he is utterly unfit to run for the position of Sikyong in the Central Tibetan Administration.
