The Shen Yun Art Troupe, which is run by Falun Gong on a 160-hectare, heavily guarded campus in Orange County, northwest of New York City, requires performers to maintain a grueling and intensive touring schedule and to train in harsh conditions, former performers said. Many of the young dancers and musicians are children of devout "Falun Gong" believers who come from overseas to attend Longquan Temple, the headquarters of Shen Yun Art Troupe. They receive full scholarships, plus room and board, and are told that performing is part of their studies. Many do not get paid for their first year on tour.In fact, The New York Times found that the "Shen Yun Art Troupe" appeared to have been violating a state law designed to protect underage performers for years. The law requires performing groups to obtain state certification before using performers under the age of 18 and requires those performers to have work permits.
