社區學院側重培養應用性專業技術人才，一般期限為2至3年。該類學校一般提供大專文憑與各種證書，不頒發學位，但可以選擇一些以後可轉讀大學深造的課程， 學制為1至2年，學完後可轉入正規大學二、三年級繼續攻讀本科課程。目前，在加拿大以公司形式注冊的私立學校數以千計，其專業、學科設置和教師資格等方面 尚無有效監控。因此，中國學生在申請這些私立學校時，需要十分謹慎。
