Sterling silver is a silver alloy, not pure silver as most people think. Pure silver is also called fine silver, which contains 99.9% silver. It is too soft for most uses. Sterling silver, which is normally defined as 92.5% silver plus 7.5% other metal, most often copper. Base metal is also used as an addition to harden the alloy to hemp cast the metal into shapes.
Sterling silver originated from continental Europe. One of the most common use of sterling silver is making fine tableware, typically includes knives, forks, and spoons, coffee and tea sets, and serving trays. Sterling silver jewelry, since it is beautiful and still affordable, has become more popular these days too.
People always find tarnishes on sterling silver when contacting with the air. Pure silver is impervious to tarnish on the surface. It is the alloy metal which attracts the tarnish. Store your sterling silver in a cool, dry place. Polishing sterling silver is simple. Buff with a cotton cloth regular. Sterling silver that has been stored away unused for a period of time might develop a significant layer of tarnish. Add some salt and baking soda in water, and soak your sterling silver for no more than 5 minutes. But if you want to polish a piece of antique sterling silver, go to professionals to have it hand-polished.
