Documents reveal that a company owned by NDP Vancouver-Langara candidate James Wang ripped off foreign students in Toronto and refused to give them legally-required refunds.
“For the past decade, NDP MLAs have complained about private post-secondary schools in British Columbia,” said Today’s BC Liberal candidate Suzanne Anton. “Now they are running a guy whose company ripped off international students across the country.”
In 2007, James Wang, (also known as Jin Bai) was vice-president of Canadian Overseas Holding Inc., which owned and operated a number of companies, including Pattison College – a school that catered to international students, offering courses at campuses in Vancouver and Toronto, Ontario.
In 2007, the Toronto campus of Pattison College abruptly shut down, leaving students high and dry. A 2008 Toronto Star story described the plight of Chang Yuan-Jen, a student from Taiwan who came to Canada to study English. In May 2007, Chang paid $5,400 to Pattison College for the fall semester. He started school in September, but three weeks into classes, the school closed its doors, leaving him and his fellow students with no classes and no refunds.
“How on earth can the NDP be running a candidate who left students from China, Japan and Korea high and dry?” asked Anton. “While James Wang lives in a $1.5-million-dollar home, these international students never got their money back.”
In the Star story, Chang describes how he worked for six years in China to save enough money to learn English in Canada and how after the school closure, most of his friends from Japan and Korea gave up on getting a refund, instead choosing to go back to Korea and Japan.
Star columnist Joe Fiorito took up Chang’s plight, calling Pattison’s office in Vancouver. He found the phone out of service and his emails were never returned.
“Tens of thousands of international students come to Canada annually, in search of skills,” said Anton. “Pattison College formerly part of James Wang’s empire, closed its’ doors in Toronto, leaving students high and dry. It is unacceptable for John Horgan and the NDP to have someone with this track record running as a candidate in this election.”
