Summary:When applied to cells, pulsed electric fields increase membrane permeability. Researchers have used this effect to force the diffusion of extracellular calcium into cells. Cell death occurs more easily in cancer cells since they are particularly sensitive to high amounts of calcium. Researchers have optimized pulsed electric field settings in an effort to attack cancer but leave healthy cells intact.
