Larry Takahashi
VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Over the weekend several media reports surfaced that the man known as the ‘balaclava rapist’ had been spotted several times in a Vancouver neighbourhood — even riding the bus, but police say that’s not true.
Larry Takahashi was granted day parole last month and that’s when investigators warned the public he would be living at a halfway house in the city. However, they say he has yet to leave the facility.
“We understand that communities are concerned. We want them to be aware, we want them to have a really good look at Mr. Takahashi’s picture because at some point he will leave his halfway house — there’s no doubt about that. But the sightings of him to this point are phantom sightings. They are false,” explains Vancouver Police Acting Sergeant Brian Montague.
He adds Takahashi has chosen not to leave, although he is allowed to as long as he abides by his curfew. “We want the public to be vigilant. But we are concerned that someone who may resemble Mr. Takahashi may wind up in a situation that we don’t want them in, obviously. We don’t want people taking matters into their own hands. We want to assure people that we are monitoring Mr. Takahashi and that we want people to call 911 if they see him violating any of his conditions. If they’re concerned about something, they need to pick up the phone and call 911,” says Montague.
In a recent report from the Parole Board, Takahashi is said to be at moderate to high-risk to reoffend and he poses a significant danger to the safety of teen girls and women.
He is 63-years-old, Asian, 5’9″ tall, 154 lbs., with short, grey hair and brown eyes. He normally wears prescription glasses.
He has a long criminal history dating back to the 1970s in Alberta. Takahashi was sent to prison in 1984 after admitting to “hands on” assaults on 29 women. He is currently serving a life sentence for multiple counts of rape, disguise with intent, aggravated sexual assault, as well as forcible confinement and sexual assault with a weapon.
