RICHARDSON — Those who knew her remember Emily Krumrei as a mother, a part-time accountant, and even a contract calendar model.
"She was the most unselfish person that I can recall in recent memory having met," said Dan Wyde, Krumrei's attorney.
News 8 has learned the 31-year-old graduated from Dallas' exclusive Ursuline Academy and was known then as Emily Josephine Bristol.
"After she graduated from Ursuline 12 or 13 years ago, she received a soccer scholarship to Florida State," Wyde said.
But on Monday morning, Richardson police said Krumrei refused to pull over during an attempted traffic stop.
"The officer attempted to get a speeding violator to pull into a parking lot," according to a written statement from police. "The violator failed to follow the officer’s directions and continued driving past him. The officer put out a description on the radio and another officer in the area noticed the vehicle and attempted to initiate his own traffic stop. The violator did not stop for the second officer. A third officer, who was working an unrelated traffic accident in the 500 block of Dumont Drive, observed the motorist driving towards him and attempted to stop her."
"He said, 'Stop or I'll shoot you!' said Arch McKinnon, who witnessed the incident.
"She clearly saw him. She slowed down as if she was going to obey the commands he was giving her. Then she accelerated, striking the officer," explained Richardson police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Perlich. "The officer — fearing for his life — then returned a gunshot toward the vehicle and it apparently struck her."
Police said the officer was bumped, but not taken to the hospital.
Krumrei's attorney told News 8 that the officer overreacted by shooting Emily through the driver's side window during the attempted traffic stop.
"How could his life be in danger if he is on the side of the vehicle out of the way of the front of the car?" Wyde asked.
Two years ago near Tyler, police arrested Krumrei for cocaine possession. She missed a court date, her attorney said, leading to an arrest warrant being issued.
But Richardson police didn't know that as officers tried to stop her on Monday morning.
Many questions remain, among them: Why did the 31-year-old mother fled to begin with?
Wyde said he has already asked Richardson police to preserve evidence and internal records related to the shooting as Krumrei's mother and brother consider their legal options.
