Hacker George Hotz has released a new crack that allows users to jailbreak Apple's iPhone 3G and 3GS. Blacksn0w - which unlocks iPhone OS 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11.07 - was classified as a "tethered jailbreak" crack by AppleInsider.
Indeed, the patch reportedly requires a live USB connection (for certain models) before hardware resets can be performed. According to TechTree, Blacksn0w jailbreaks iPhone devices "faster" than other cracks. Once unlocked, the iPhone can be used with any mobile carrier.
"This may be the best iPhone users ever have it," Hotz explained in an official blog post. "Be sure, if you have a 3GS or iPod Touch 3, to use Cydia's 'On File' or Firmware Umbrella in order to be able to restore to 3.1.2 in the future. And as always, the baseband cannot be downgraded, so be *super* careful with updates if you need the unlock."
